Tiresia’s advice

  1. What specifically does Teiresias tell Odysseus that he must do in order to die peacefully in old age?
Tiresias says that Odysseus’ crew will arrive at Thrinacia Island, which is full of herd and fat flocks grazing and the cattle of Helios, god of sun. But he says they must not harm them, or they will be destroyed.
Tiresias tells him that when he goes back to Ithaca, he will see vulgar men trying to take over his throne, power, and wife. He should kill all those men. After that, Tiresias advises that he carry an oar and find a place where nobody ever knows what sea is. If someone asks what “that weight across your shoulder a fan to winnow grain” is, he should stick the oar in the ground and make a sacrifie of beasts to Poseidon.
According to Tiresias, only if Odysseus accomplishes all the requirements, will he rest in peace at home.
